ice cream chez ernest

Ernest ice cream

Ernest has the best ice cream in La Rochelle and I would dare say, the region. Whenever we’re in the area, we make sure to stop chez Ernest for 2 scoops. They always have the classic flavors, but one can also find interesting combinations such as lemon-basil, coffee-cognac and my personal favorite, poppy-strawberry. Ernest’s ice cream is best enjoyed sitting on the quai, legs dangling over the blue-green water, soaking up some sun.

Hmm, well gelato just technically means ice cream in Italian, so I guess it could be. But from what I’ve read about Italian gelato, they may use a different ratio of ingredients in France than in Italy. I’m really not sure though. They just call it artisanal ice cream. In any case, it’s SO good! =)

Yum! One of my favorite things to do in France that summer I spent in Avignon was get ice cream. But they did not have these extravagant flavors. I’ve been thinking a lot about a red wine and raspberry sorbet that was mentioned in David Lebovitz’s blog and is apparently in his book Room for Dessert.

Oh I love David…he’s got so many great recipes. I’ve never made the sorbet, but I did make a red wine and berry sauce for panna cotta, which I got off of his site I think. Going for ice cream is also one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, we’ve yet to find a good ice cream shop in our neighborhood.
